Sudan's government has launched a major offensive against rebel bases in the far north of Darfur, two rebel factions have said.

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) — Sudanese government troops and warplanes have launched an offensive deep into rebel-held desert areas in northern Darfur, rebel leaders said Wednesday.
　
Sudan's military declined to comment on the claim. A spokesman for the joint United Nations-African Union peacekeeping force in Darfur, Noureddine Mezni, said it was looking into reports of clashes but had no troops in the remote area and could not confirm anything.
　
Commanders from two rebel factions said government forces pushed into the El-Atrun area three days ago, near Darfur's northern border with Libya.
