　振り返ってみれば、そもそも政治とは無縁だった大会の方が珍しい。
　競泳の前畑選手が金メダルを取った３６年のベルリン大会は、ナチスの宣伝に徹底的に利用された。
　中国が台湾問題を理由に開幕直前に参加を見送った５６年のメルボルン大会。テロでイスラエル人選手らの命が失われた７２年のミュンヘン大会。冷戦下で東西両陣営のボイコット合戦にさらされた８０年のモスクワ、８４年のロサンゼルスの両大会……。
　主役は選手だとしても、世界の人たちの記憶には、競技場外の事件や国際社会の争いと合わせて刻まれていく。それが五輪なのかもしれない。

　この社説の筆法はWPやNYTの社説とよく似ている。パクリとまでは言わないけど。
