The elected parliament, it is true, has seldom been less than a disappointment and quite often a disgrace. With the Brotherhood holding 46 per cent of seats and ultra-fundamentalist Salafists a further 24 per cent, it has devoted more time to discussing prayer times and the position of women in society than urgent measures to restore security and create jobs. The Brotherhood has badly overplayed its hand. Instead of dealing inclusively with the concerns of women, minority Coptic Christians or liberals, its lust for power after decades of proscription has sent a shudder up the national spine.
