　米国科学アカデミー紀要（ＰＮＡＳ）に掲載された同研究によると、ＣＣＤが観察されたミツバチの細胞内では、「タンパク質工場」として機能する細胞器官、リボソームが粉々になっていた。イスラエル急性まひウイルス（ＩＡＰＶ）や羽変形病ウイルス（ＤＷＶ）といったウイルスがリボソームの異常を引き起こし、ミツバチの病気・ストレス耐性を低下させている可能性があるという。

　「リボソームが粉々」とウイルス説とは直結しないというか、後者についてはすでに議論されているのだが。

The presence of these fragments may be a possible consequence of picorna-like viral infection, including deformed wing virus and Israeli acute paralysis virus, and may be related to arrested translation. Ribosomal fragment abundance and presence of multiple viruses may prove to be useful diagnostic markers for colonies afflicted with CCD.
