今日の大手紙社説

 豪雨の話もあったが社説的な概論で扱うのはどうだろうか、よくわからなかった。他は特になし。民主党政権で浮かれる人もいるのだろうというか命を繋ごうとする組織もあるのだろうが、まあ、困ったことになったな。

Nevertheless, as the DPJ moves closer to power, it must be clearer in at least three areas. First, it should sketch its plans to pay for pledges on child benefit and farmers’ income support. Vague promises to cut waste and find hidden pots of money are not enough.
 
Second, it has talked ambitiously about making bureaucrats more accountable to politicians. No bad thing in itself, if mishandled, this could do more harm than good by demoralising the very people who have held Japan together through years of misrule. Third, the DPJ has floated interesting ideas on foreign policy, including recalibrating Japan’s alliance with the US. But its messages have been contradictory, reflecting splits within the party. That has produced nervousness in Washington.
 
Nothing concentrates thinking like the prospect of power. A little more clarity would now be helpful. Japan’s voters will opt for change in any case. But they deserve to have a better idea about precisely what they are voting for.
