The Irish language (Gaeilge) is set to get official status in the EU on 1 January, bringing the total to 23.

Irish (Gaeilge / Gaedhilge), a Goidelic language spoken in Ireland, is constitutionally recognised as the first official language of the Republic of Ireland, and has official recognition in Northern Ireland as well. On 13 June 2005, EU foreign ministers unanimously decided to make Irish an official language of the European Union. The new arrangements will come into effect on 1 January 2007.
