A Message from Don Cheadle and Paul Rusesabagina
You are aware of the horrible atrocities that took place in Rwanda just a decade ago. And you know that this tragedy was made all the more horrible because the people who knew about it failed to act to stop it. As we made Hotel Rwanda, we were overwhelmed with sadness and anger as we relived the lack of response by those who knew.
Another genocide is taking place right now in the Darfur region of Sudan. We know, because we just returned from there.
Not since the Rwanda genocide of 1994 has the world seen such a calculated campaign of slaughter, rape, starvation and displacement. Government-backed militias, known collectively as the Janjaweed, are systematically eliminating entire communities. Villages are being razed, women and girls raped and branded, men and boys murdered, and food and water supplies targeted and destroyed. Victims report that government air strikes frequently precede militia raids.
It is conservatively estimated that more than 200,000 human beings have died. If we do not act, the violence will continue, people will not receive adequate aid and protection, and many more will die. One of the most striking lines in Hotel Rwanda is, “After they see this, people are going to say 'My God, that’s terrible' and then go on eating their dinners.”
We ask that you act, today, to stop the violence. Write to President Bush and your other elected representatives to ask that the United States do whatever is necessary to end the butchery. Inscribe your movie ticket with the commitment, “Not On My Watch,” and send it to the president.
We don’t want to watch a movie named Hotel Darfur. Please act now. Thank you.

みなさんは１０年ほど前にルワンダで起きた恐ろしい虐殺のことを知っています。さらにこの悲劇の恐ろしい点は、事態を知っていながらその制止に失敗したことです。そのこともみなさんご存じです。私たちが映画「ホテル・ルワンダ」制作しながら、私たちが悲しみと怒りに圧倒されのは、それを知った人の反応にまた欠落があることを再体験したからです。
もう一つの民族虐殺が今現在スーダンのダルフール地域で進行しています。私たちがそれを知っているのはちょうどその地から戻ってきたばかりだからです。
１９９４年のルワンダ虐殺に至るまで、世界には殺人、レイプ、飢饉、排斥についてこれほどまでに積み上がれたキャンペーンはありませんでした。まとめてジャンジャウィードと呼ばれる、その政府が後押しする民兵たちは、組織的に、社会全体の排斥を行っています。村落は破壊され、婦人と少女はレイプされ傷つけられ、男性と少年たちは殺害され、食料と水は標的とされ破壊されています。被害者の証言によれば、政府軍による空爆が民兵の襲撃に先行しています。
ごく控えめに見積もっても２０万人以上もの人が死にました。もし私たちが行動しなければ、この暴力はさらに進行し、人々は十分な援助と保護も受けられず、さらに多くが死んでいくでしょう。映画「ホテル・ルワンダ」でもっとも衝撃的なのは、「これを見終わって、人々は、『まあなんてひどい』と言い、次は夕食に出かける」という部分でした。
私たちはみなさんに今日あの暴力を止めるよう行動して欲しいのです。ブッシュ大統領とその他の国会議員に、あの虐殺を終わらせるのに必要こと全に合衆国が尽力するように要請してください。映画のチケットには「私の任務じゃないなんて言わないで」と書き、そしてそれを大統領に送ってください。
私たちは、「ホテル・ダルフール」と題した映画など見たくはないのです。今、行動を起こしてください。ありがとう。
